Why Are the Medicis the Godfathers of the Renaissance?
There are always places that represent every age throughout the history of the world. In the 15th century, it was Florence. It started with the Medici family, which used the knowledge found in the lost secrets of the ancient worlds and resurrected the achievements of classics (“The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance”). But why are the Medicis called the godfathers of the Renaissance?
The Renaissance was a time that effectively ended the medieval period. It started in the 14th century, where the Medicis started to use concepts of the past. They were an ordinary family with a very powerful ambition: to outsmart the ruling families and to rule Florence. With the family’s astuteness, they rose from ordinary statehood to become the most powerful family that ruled Europe for more than 300 years.
The first generation of the Medicis created a stratagem that led to them amassing unprecedented power and unparalleled wealth. It became the birth of the multifarious public and private dealings that led the family to become the patron of many things. Despite the family’s ruthless ambition and controversial nature, being the God’s bankers, they have ruled and inspired the ingenuity of unorthodox artists such as Filippo Brunelleschi. Without the Medicis, its friends and supporters, the innovative and creatively engineered Brunelleschi’s dome would never have been realized (“The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance”).
There was a touch of ruthlessness and political maneuvering, wherein the Medicis created a systematic social network of elite families. To socialize with the elite families, a family would have to deal with the Medicis first (Padgett et al. 1276). However, this does not consider the fact that this family set the cornerstone of a cultural explosion. It incorporated its found power and knowledge, which sparked a revolution of artistry across Europe. The creation of the Birth of Venus, the sultry masterpiece of Michelangelo’s David, the reformation of Martin Luther, and Galileo’s earth-shattering confrontation with the Church. These are just highlights in the name of the Medicis that gave Europe an impetus from the ravages of the dark ages.
